Don't cat-nap the kittens!

Kitten season is here, and while your first instinct may be to scoop them up, sometimes the best way to help is to wait and observe.

What to Do If You Find Kittens: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Stop and Observe Before taking action, watch from a distance. A mother cat may be nearby, especially if the kittens appear clean and well-fed. Feral moms are highly secretive and only return when they feel safe.

  2. Determine Their Age & Condition

Use the guide below to assess their age and needs. Tiny kittens under five weeks old require special care, while older kittens may be weaned and better suited for fostering or TNR (trap-neuter-return).

Flowchart on finding kittens. Includes steps: check for injury, estimate age with kitten photos, and actions if mom cat is present or absent.

  3. Reunite If Possible

If the kittens are healthy, leave them in place and monitor. Their best chance of survival is with their mother. If you’re unsure, give it a few hours—mom might return when no humans are around.

  4. Have a Plan in Place

If the kittens are sick, injured, or in immediate danger, they may need help. But know that rescues and shelters are overwhelmed. If you must step in, be ready for the commitment:

✔️ Bottle feeding every 3 hours ✔️ Stimulating for pee and poop ✔️ Keeping them warm and safe

5. Know Your Options

  • 🏡 Foster if You Can - Kitten formula and supplies are available at pet stores, and online resources can guide you.

  • 🏥 Contact Local Rescues – Many are full, but some may provide advice or support.

  • 🏢 Shelter Surrender – If you have no other options, surrendering is safer than leaving kittens outside, where they face predators, illness, and traffic. Be aware that shelters euthanize when over capacity.

  1. Always Remember -- You Can Make a Difference!

Every action you take helps save lives. Whether fostering, donating, or spreading awareness, you are part of the solution.
